Box Score HARRISVILLE, R.I. (Jan. 14) – MacKenzie Roy scored two goals and added and assist to lead the Utica College women's ice hockey team to a 5-1 victory at Nichols Friday evening. Utica, which scored a power play and two short-handed goals in the game, improves to 8-6-0 while Nichols falls to 2-11-0 overall.
Roy scored a pair of goals 25 seconds apart midway through the first period to put Utica on top. Samantha Glockling won the faceoff to Meagan Sudik , who tipped it back for Roy to one-time it from the point at 10:09 for a power-play marker. Then Glockling won the draw right back to Roy for another blast from the point at 10:34.
With two skaters in the penalty box, Lynny Gonzalez picked off a pass inside the Bison zone and skated it in for a short-handed breakaway at 7:46 to start off the second period's scoring. Meredith Tice followed with a short-handed score seven minutes later when she crashed the net to put in a rebound off a breakout by Meghan McMahon and edge the Pioneers ahead, 4-0.
Mandy Manopla (West Palm Beach, Fla.) put the Bison on the board at 4:20 of the third period, putting in the puck at the near post off a netfront pass from
Megan Gerein (Dubuque, Iowa).
Roy sent a pass ahead to Carmen Johnson for the sophomore to bring into the zone, but Johnson paused at the blue line before dropping it to Tiffany Bichrest. Bichrest stepped in with it before scoring from the high slot with 1:32 remaining in the game.
Francesca Palazzo (Bernardston, Mass.) finished with 33 saves. Jennifer Hamel made 32 stops in the win.
Nichols hosts Cortland State Saturday in a 7:40 p.m. game. Utica is idle until a 7 p.m. home game against Williams on Sunday, January 23.
