The Nichols College softball team fell to Illinois-Wesleyan University and Montclair State in a pair of morning contests at the Spring Rebel Games Wednesday on the Bison’s spring trip. Illinois-Wesleyan topped Nichols, 4-0, in the first game, while a comeback bid fell short against Montclair State, 6-4, in the second game. Nichols stands at 2-6 with two games remaining on its Southern swing.

The Nichols College baseball team fell to Salisbury University, 12-2, at the Cocoa Expo Wednesday morning. Josh Clark (Brunswick, Maine) and George Sergi (Blackstone, Mass.) scored single runs for the Bison in the third and eighth innings. Nichols will face the Gulls again on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Junior JC LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader against Baruch to pick up a 1-0 win after the Bison dropped a 6-5 game in the opener Tuesday at the Cocoa Expo.

The Nichols College baseball team drew even on the season after a 6-4 victory over Hilbert College on Monday at the Cocoa Expo. Dan Smith (Verona, N.J.) and Bryan Gill (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) each drove in two runs in the win. Al Montalto (Wilmington, Mass.) was 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and two runs scored. Nichols improves to 2-2 and faces Baruch for a doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Nichols College softball team split games on its third day at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., defeating Geneva College, 1-0, in the early game before falling to Framingham State, 7-3, in the second game. The Bison stand at 2-4 on the year and face Illinois-Wesleyan and Montclair State on Wednesday after an off day Tuesday. Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) tossed a four-hitter with two strikeouts in the first game to improve to 1-1 on the season.

The Nichols College baseball team split a doubleheader with Richard Stockton Sunday at the Cocoa Expo, falling in the first game, 3-0, before winning the second, 7-2. Junior Austin Martin (Wakefield, R.I.) earned the complete-game win in the second game with six strikeouts and six hits.The Bison cranked out 13 hits in the nightcap, led by a 3-for-4 performance from Josh Clark (Brunswick, Maine) and a 2-for-3, 2 RBI effort from Matt Whitman (North Plainfield, N.J); both scored two runs.

The Bison led, 5-1, in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a three-run homer and an RBI double from junior first baseman Austin Martin (Wakefield, R.I.), Nichols is back in action on Saturday morning when the Bison take on Hilbert in a doubleheader.

The Nichols College softball team opened the 2010 season at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., Saturday, dropping close games to Kean University and Rutgers-Newark. The Bison rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning against Kean, but fell, 6-4. Against Rutgers-Newark, the Bison had a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth, but the Scarlet Raiders edged closer and then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win, 9-8. The Bison combined for five extra-base hits on the day, led by a double and a triple from Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.).

The Nichols College men’s tennis team opened the spring season with a 9-0 victory over Rhode Island College at the Pomfret School Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Steve Carella (Rocky Hill, Conn.) battled back after a tough first set to force a third set tiebreak in his 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win over Nathan Rebello. Sophomore Tyler McLaughlin (Hollis, N.H.) and first year Tony Ramsdell (Gardner, Mass.) were impressive in their doubles debut together, closing out their 8-0 win in 20 minutes.
