NEFC Honors 12 From Football For Academic Success

DUDLEY, Mass. – The New England Football Conference has named 12 Nichols College student-athletes to the 2008-2009 NEFC All-Academic Team. A total of 237 student-athletes from the league’s 16 teams were honored on the All-Academic squad, which was announced Wednesday.

Three Bison sophomores were named to the team, including DB Brandon Wallace (Windsor, Conn.), a management major, DB Ryan Pandolfi (No. Smithfield, R.I.), a sport management major, and DL Vincent Caprio (No. Branford, Conn.), who majors in accounting.

A human resources major, junior DL Anthony Freni (Norton, Mass.) and classmate TE John Sielawa (Dudley, Mass.), a sport management major, were also named to the team.

Six student-athletes of Nichols’ 10-member senior class also earned all-academic status: LB Tom Mulligan (Elmwood, Park, N.J.), WR John Snediker (Grafton, Mass.), LB Erik Valentine (West Lebanon, N.H.), LB/P Josh Harris (Northbridge, Mass.), RB Jay Pino (Middletown, N.J.) and FB Jim Fritz (Souderton, Pa.).

Rounding out Nichols’ All-Academic team honorees is WR Chris Vallee (Fitchburg, Mass.), who is pursuing an MBA in security management.

The Bison open the 2009 season at Vendetti Field on September 4 in a 7 p.m. game against Westfield State.

Nichols College senior DL Bill Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) has been selected to play in the 2010 Division II/III All American Bowl. Hassett will compete against college football players from across the country in the all-star game, set for March 27th at Laidley Field Stadium in Charleston, W.Va.

Senior offensive tackle Brandt Genga (Middletown, R.I.) has been named to the ECAC Division III Northeast All-Star Team, it was announced Wednesday. Genga, a three-time All-NEFC Boyd Division and two-time All-Worcester Area honoree, served as co-captain of the Bison in 2009.

Six members of the Nichols College football team have been named to the Worcester Area Football Association All-Star Teams. The Bison had three from each side of the ball, offense and defense, named to the All-star squads. Senior DT Bill Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) and junior CB Brandon Wallace (Windsor, Conn.) earned First Team accolades, while senior WR Anthony Pillari (Lumberton, N.J.), senior OT Brandt Genga (Middletown, R.I.), first year OG Charles Baker (Milton, Mass.), and junior DE Patrick Gregory (Webster, N.Y.) earned Second Team honors.

Nichols college senior WR Mike Seiger (Pittsfield, Mass.) and sophomore DB Mike Rubalcaba (Barre, Vt.) have earned spots on the New England Football Conference Weekly Honor Roll for games the weekend of November 7th. Seiger averaged 15.4 yards per catch in his third 100+ yard performance of the season, while Rubalcaba had the interception that set up Nichols’ touchdown drive in the second quarter.

Despite a season-high 423 yards of offense, the Nichols College football team closed out the season with a 31-10 loss at Western New England College Saturday afternoon. Sophomore quarterback Sean Smith-Vaughan was 31-for-54 passing for 344 yards with two interceptions. The 31 completions ties the single-game mark set in 1994 by Doug McKay against Assumption. Senior receiver Mike Seiger (Pittsfield, Mass.) had nine catches for 139 yards - his third 100+ yard game in the last four. First year fullback Anthony Terenzi (Londonderry, N.H.) finished with a game high 60 yards rushing and caught the Bison's TD in the second quarter.
