Football Falls Short at Salve Regina, 28-12

NEWPORT, R.I. – Junior quarterback Jeff St. Onge (Kingston, N.H.) rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another to lead Salve Regina University to a 28-12 win over Nichols College in New England Football Conference (NEFC) action Saturday afternoon at Toppa Field.

St. Onge rushed for 59 yards on 11 carries and completed 15-of-21 passes for 218 yards, including a 21-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Ben Hall (Conway, N.H.). The win lifts the Seahawks to 3-2 (2-1 NEFC) on the season while the Bison fall to 2-3 (0-3 NEFC).  

Senior LB Erik Valentine (West Lebanon, N.H.) had a game- and career-high 13 tackles (10 solo) in the setback for the Bison, including a tackle for a loss of three yards. Nichols recorded two sacks for a combined loss of 12 yards. Senior DB David McLean (San Antonio, Texas) recorded his first interception of the season before the close of the first half.

The Seahawks built a 20-0 lead before Nichols was able to get on the board with 4:56 remaining in the first half as sophomore quarterback Justin Nelson (Oceanside, Calif.) hooked up with graduate student wide receiver Chris Vallee (Fitchburg, Mass.) for an eight-yard touchdown pass (missed PAT), making it 20-6.

Hall’s fourth touchdown reception of the season at 8:02 of the third quarter gave the Seahawks a 26-6 lead (missed PAT) and was the only scoring in the quarter. Nichols sophomore quarterback Charles Samples (Deming, N.M.) replaced Nelson in the fourth and capped a five-play, 55-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run. On the two-point conversion attempt, Samples’ pass was intercepted by freshman safety Zach Szymanski (Dracut, Mass.) and returned 98 yards for two points, making the score 28-12.

Nelson finished the afternoon 12-of-28 for 83 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Samples led the Bison with 80 yards rushing while senior tailback Robert Morris (Melbourne, Fla.) recorded 66 yards on the ground.

Salve Regina sophomore back Rob LaRiviere-Tougas (Easthampton, Mass.) carries 29 times for a career-high 133 yards as the Seahawk offense piled up 403 yards of total offense. Salve Regina was able to overcome a season-high 10 penalties, including several false start infractions on offense.

Nichols returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Vendetti Field when the Bison host Plymouth St. (5-1, 3-0 NEFC) at 1:00 p.m. Plymouth St. downed Endicott on Saturday afternoon 36-14.

The Western New England College football team spoiled Nichols College's senior day with a 42-14 victory in New England Football Conference Boyd Division action at Vendetti Field Saturday afternoon. Nichols tailback Robert Morris (Melbourne, Fla.) led all rushers with 100 yards on just eight carries, including an 80-yard scamper to put Nichols (2-8, 0-7 NEFC Boyd) on the board in the first quarter. It was the fifth 100-yard game for Morris this season.

Nichols College senior linebacker Josh Harris (Northbridge, Mass.) has been named the New England Football Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week for play ending Saturday, October 25. He shares the honor with linebacker Steve Campbell of Plymouth State. Harris made a game-high and career-high matching 12 tackles and four tackles for a loss of 18 yards, recorded a sack for a loss of 11 yards, blocked a punt and forced a fumble that led to a Nichols touchdown that gave them a third quarter lead in the Bison's setback to UMass Dartmouth Saturday.

The UMass Dartmouth football team scored a pair of touchdowns just over a minute apart midway through the fourth quarter to surge past Nichols for a 33-22 NEFC Boyd Division victory Saturday afternoon at Vendetti Field. The Corsairs (5-3, 3-2) jumped out to a 13-0 first-quarter lead, but the Bison (2-6, 0-5) climbed back to take a three-point lead late in the third stanza before UMass Dartmouth struck twice within 1:09 late in the game to run away with the win. Nichols quarterback Charlie Samples (Deming, N.M.) scored all three touchdowns for the Bison, throwing for a pair and running in for another, a 57-yard sprint. Samples finished the day completing seven of 19 passes for 168 yards.

The Plymouth State University football team scored 27 second-quarter points en route to a 36-9 New England Football Conference Boyd Division victory over Nichols College at Vendetti Field Saturday afternoon. Sophomore quarterback Charlie Samples (Deming, N.M.) opened the game with a 68-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Pillari (Lamberton, N.J.) on the Bison’s first play of the game. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Bison had an early lead on the Division leaders, 6-0, just 18 seconds into the game. Pillari led the Bison, who drop to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the Boyd Division, with 184 all-purpose yards on the day.

The Endicott College football team spoiled Nichols’ homecoming with a 27-20 New England Football Conference Boyd Division victory at Vendetti Field Saturday afternoon. Sophomore quarterback Justin Nelson (Oceanside, Calif.) threw for three touchdowns, completing 24-for-43 passes with a career-high 246 yards to lead the Bison. Joining Nelson with a career-high day was junior Anthony Pillari (Lamberton, N.J.), whose 119 receiving yards and touchdown marked a career-best for the junior.
