Benoit strong in singles and doubles action

LEWISTON, Maine (Sept. 30) – Nichols was well represented at the USTA/ITA Division III Women's Tennis New England Regional Championship on Friday. Sophomore Anna Dyakiv and first-year Lindsay Benoit won their opening round doubles match and Benoit's singles match ran just about four hours.

The Bison duo captured an 8-5 triumph over Erika Blauth and Kristen Doerer from Bates. In the second round the tandem fell to Victoria Aiello and Leah Kepping from Middlebury 8-3.

In singles action, Benoit was strong in a lengthy session with Roberta Bergstein of Brandeis as the rookie rebounded from a 7-6 (7-3) first set to post a 7-5 before falling 7-6 (7-4) in the deciding set. The contest finished after most of the other second round matches had concluded. Dyakiv drew No. 4 Lok Sze-Leung from Middlebury and was downed in a pair of 6-0 sets.

Nichols is back on the court next Saturday when the Bison hosts Endicott at noon. The match is shaping up to be the showdown for the top seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament set to begin on Tuesday, October 11.
