BEVERLY, Mass. (Sept. 7) –The Nichols College women’s tennis team improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday afternoon with a 7-2 victory at Endicott College. The Bison avenge a TCCC semifinals loss to the Gulls from a year ago, leaving their foes to stand at 1-1 both overall and in conference action.

 

Nichols held a 2-1 lead after doubles, with 8-1 and 8-2 victories at the first two flights courtesy of TCCC Player of the Week Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) and Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) at the top spot and Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) at the second flight.

 

McQuiggan and Miller were the first to finish on the singles side, as McQuiggan finished Emily Annis, 6-2, 6-0, at second singles before Miller didn’t drop a point against Laura MacLeod in a 6-0, 6-0, fourth flight win. Balabanova posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at fifth singles and newcomer Nicole Marziarz (Southington, Conn.) was edged at the sixth flight, 6-1, 6-4, before Dyakiv finished the match by ousting Kate Cioffi, 6-2, 6-3 in the top spot.

 

Nichols continues TCCC action Saturday in a noon match against Colby-Sawyer College.

Senior Chelsey Miller claimed the match-clinching fifth point with a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory to help send the #1 Nichols to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship match as the team defeated #4 Salve Regina 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Nichols moves on to host #2 Endicott on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for the CCC Championship and automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament in the spring.

The Nichols women's tennis team claimed three major Commonwealth Coast Conference awards and numerous all-conference nods following the 2011 regular season. Sophomore Anna Dyakiv was named Player of the Year, while first-year Lindsay Benoit was selected as the Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Paul Brower was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

Nichols sophomore Anna Dyakiv and first-year Lindsay Benoit have earned weekly women's tennis honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference, it was announced Tuesday. Dyakiv took home Player of the Week honors for the second time this season while Lindsay Benoit was named Rookie of the Week for an eye-popping fourth time.

Nichols was well represented at the USTA/ITA Division III Women's Tennis New England Regional Championship on Friday. Sophomore Anna Dyakiv and first-year Lindsay Benoit won their opening round doubles match and Benoit's singles match ran just about four hours.
