Women's Tennis Opens Season With 9-0 Win at RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 1) – The Nichols College women’s tennis team opened the 2010 season Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 non-conference victory at Rhode Island College. The Bison’s lineup was bolstered by stellar play from all three first-year players in their collegiate debuts. Nichols opens The Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday in a noon home match against Curry.

Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the top singles spot while classmate Erin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.) rallied in both sets for a 6-4, 6-3 win at fifth singles. Nicole Marziarz (Southington, Conn.) beat the heat for a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the fourth flight.

Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) and Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) were other singles winners, while McQuiggan and Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-3 win at the top doubles flight. Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) and Dyakiv posted an 8-1 win at second doubles in their first match together.

Senior Chelsey Miller claimed the match-clinching fifth point with a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory to help send the #1 Nichols to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship match as the team defeated #4 Salve Regina 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Nichols moves on to host #2 Endicott on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for the CCC Championship and automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament in the spring.

The Nichols women's tennis team claimed three major Commonwealth Coast Conference awards and numerous all-conference nods following the 2011 regular season. Sophomore Anna Dyakiv was named Player of the Year, while first-year Lindsay Benoit was selected as the Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Paul Brower was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

Nichols sophomore Anna Dyakiv and first-year Lindsay Benoit have earned weekly women's tennis honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference, it was announced Tuesday. Dyakiv took home Player of the Week honors for the second time this season while Lindsay Benoit was named Rookie of the Week for an eye-popping fourth time.

The Nichols women's tennis squad won it's second outright CCC regular season title and third in three years with the 5-4 win over Endicott on Saturday. Senior Chelsey Miller won both her singles and doubles match in her final regular season contest for the Bison.

Nichols was well represented at the USTA/ITA Division III Women's Tennis New England Regional Championship on Friday. Sophomore Anna Dyakiv and first-year Lindsay Benoit won their opening round doubles match and Benoit's singles match ran just about four hours.
