Pio Named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar

NORMAN, Okla. (July 8)Pat Pio (Somers, Conn.), a recent graduate of Nichols College, has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, it was announced Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Pio is one of 60 Division III golfers nationwide to earn the honor, and is the only representative from The Commonwealth Coast Conference.

One of nine New England golfers to earn the honor, Pio carded four-straight NEIGA All-New England honors in his career and claimed the ECAC Division III Championship and the TCCC Championship individual titles in his senior campaign, winning the TCCC title for the second time in his career. He is a PING Division III Third Team All-American and All-Region honoree, becoming the school’s first All-American in any sport in over five years in 2009. In 2008, he led the Bison to the program’s first-ever NEIGA Division III title with a career-best eighth-place finish on the individual leaderboard. In 2007, Pio led Nichols to the TCCC Team Championship title while winning the Individual title as a sophomore.  

In 49 career events, Pio finished in the top-10 on 42 occasions, the top-5 in 28 events, and placed first 13 times. He finished in the top-10 in all eight fall matches in 2009, and medaled at the Trinity Invitational for the second consecutive year. Pio earned the College’s Hal Chalmers Memorial Athletic Award for Dedication and Sportsmanship this spring and was named the Nichols College Junior (2009) and Sophomore (2008) Male Athlete of the Year.

Pio is a 2010 graduate of Nichols College with degrees in accounting and management. He volunteered his time with the Catch the Spirit Golf Clinic at Longmeadow Country Club and with Relay for Life. He was also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council.

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon Division III All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 79.0, maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

The Nichols College golf team moved up eight places after the opening round to finish 24th at the 77th Annual NEIGA Championship Tuesday. The Bison cut 25 strokes off their opening round score, finishing 12th among Division III teams. Kevin Wheeler won the bunker contest and Brian Sears carded one of the best second round scores of the 168-player field at two-over (74).

Nichols College sophomore Brian Sears and Endicott College sophomore Nick Erlichman each carded a 74 (+2) to earn co-medalist honors of the 9th Annual Bison Invitational held Sunday at the par-72, 6,483-yard Green Hill Golf Course. Led by Sears, the Nichols White team finished fourth, while the Nichols Black team finished fifth in the seven-team event.

First year Kevin Wheeler took top individual honors and led the Nichols College men's golf team to a first place finish at the Mitchell Invitational held at Shennecossett Golf Course Wednesday afternoon. Wheeler finished with a 76 (+5) for his first top-place finish, two strokes ahead of his nearest competitor after posting the best score of the front nine. The Bison combined for a 331, finishing three strokes ahead of second-place Newbury.

The Nichols College golf team finished tied for seventh place at the 2011 ECAC Division III New England Men's Golf Championship at par-72, 6,833-yard Hampden Country Club in Hampden, Mass. The event was shortened to one 18-hole round on Sunday after Saturday's opening round was washed out. The Bison were led by first year Kevin Wheeler, who finished tied for fifth place at two-over.

Round One of the 2011 ECAC Division III New England Men's Golf Championship at Hampden Country Club in Hampden, Mass., scheduled for a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 1 has been cancelled due to inclement weather. The championship has been reduced from 36-holes to 18-holes. The 18-hole championship round will be played on Sunday, October 2 at Hampden Country Club.

9.27.11 | Men's Golf
The Bison's Zach Kohn carded a 76, but Chris Gosselin of Anna Maria edged out the junior on the 16th hole by one stroke to take top individual honors in a quad 'B' golf match hosted by Nichols at the Dudley Hill Golf Couse Tuesday afternoon. The AMCATS took first place, finishing two strokes ahead of Nichols, which finished the day with a team score of 312.
