Men's Tennis TCCC Semifinal Pushed to Thursday

DUDLEY, Mass. (April 28) – The Nichols College men’s tennis team’s The Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinal match has been postponed to Thursday, April 29th due to late quarterfinal round finishes on Tuesday night. The second-seeded Bison will host third-seeded Salve Regina at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Francis W. Robinson Courts.

Nichols defeated seventh-seeded Wentworth, 5-1, Tuesday night shortly after 9:30 p.m. after the match had been moved indoors to the Pomfret School’s courts due to inclement weather. Salve Regina edged sixth-seeded Endicott, 5-2, four hours later, finishing around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Newport Casino after starting their match at 9:30 p.m.

The Nichols College men's tennis team had a strong showing on the final day of play at the Stonehill Invitational to win the team title by one point over the host Skyhawks. Steve Carella, Brandon Roode, and Arsen Gasparyan all won their singles flights on Sunday to boost the Bison to the team title. Carella played some of the best tennis of his career, cruising into the third singles flight championship with an 8-2 pro set win before a 6-1, 6-3 semifinals victory. He went three sets with Thomas Alaimo of Stonehill in the championship, winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

The Nichols College men's tennis team was swept on the singles side in an 8-1 non-conference loss at Coast Guard Wednesday afternoon. The Bears improve to 3-1 in their final fall match, while Nichols dips to 1-3 prior to the Bison's final action this weekend at the Stonehill Invitational. Senior Steve Carella and first year Brandon Roode earned Nichols' lone point with a 9-8 (2) victory at the top doubles flight.

Led by David Drucker, the Nichols College men's tennis team rebounded from a 5-4 decision to Holy Cross in the morning session to blank Assumption, 9-0, in the evening at the Francis W. Robinson Courts on Saturday. The senior went 2-0 in both singles and doubles competition.

The Nichols College men's tennis team opened the fall campaign Sunday, falling to Wesleyan, 7-2. Senior Steve Carella and first year Brandon Roode won their singles matches for the Bison, who are back in action on Saturday, September 17 in a home tri-match with Holy Cross and Assumption.

Members of the Nichols College men's and women's tennis teams have been recognized for academic success by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, it was announced recently. The women's team saw five players earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status and four members of the men's team earned ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition.

Robinson Courts Saturday afternoon. Nichols, which received its lone point in a top singles flight win from David Drucker, sees its season end at 16-5.
