Men's Tennis Clinches TCCC Tourney Second Seed With 8-1 Win Over Curry

DUDLEY, Mass. (April 24) – The Nichols College men’s tennis team swept the singles side en route to an 8-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Curry Saturday at the Francis W. Robinson Courts. The Bison conclude the regular season with a school-record 16-5 ledger and a 10-1 TCCC record to clinch the second seed in the TCCC Tournament. Nichols will host a quarterfinal round match on Monday, April 26th at 2 p.m. Curry drops to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in TCCC matches.

The Bison led, 2-1, after doubles action, getting a decisive 8-3 win at the top flight from Justin DeLuca (Mashpee, Mass.) and Tyler McLaughlin (Hollis, N.H.). Tony Ramsdell (Gardner, Mass.) and Steve Carella (Rocky Hill, Conn.) edged out Brian Leahy and Ben Radzicki, 8-6, to give the Bison a 2-0 lead at the second flight, but the Colonels held on for a 9-7 victory at the third flight when J.D. Moyer and Tyler Dulmage defeated Nichols seniors Matthew Roach (Worcester, Mass.) and Kevin Pittz (Delmar, N.Y.).

David Drucker (Bellmore, N.Y.) was the first to finish on the singles side, handing Charlie Edlund a 6-0, 6-0 loss at No. 2 singles to extend his win streak to 14 matches. DeLuca quickly followed with a top-flight win by the same scores over Kirschner to remain unbeaten on the year.

Dan Young (Washington Depot, Conn.) clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Radzicki at No. 6 singles for his 10th-straight victory, and the Bison wrapped up the match with a straight-set win from Carella at the third flight, a three-set rally from Eliot Wuhrmann (Fontainbleau, France) at No. 5 singles, and a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the fourth flight from McLaughlin.

Nichols is making its eighth TCCC Tournament appearance in the last 10 years and will host its first TCCC Tournament match since 2004.

The Nichols College men's tennis team had a strong showing on the final day of play at the Stonehill Invitational to win the team title by one point over the host Skyhawks. Steve Carella, Brandon Roode, and Arsen Gasparyan all won their singles flights on Sunday to boost the Bison to the team title. Carella played some of the best tennis of his career, cruising into the third singles flight championship with an 8-2 pro set win before a 6-1, 6-3 semifinals victory. He went three sets with Thomas Alaimo of Stonehill in the championship, winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

The Nichols College men's tennis team was swept on the singles side in an 8-1 non-conference loss at Coast Guard Wednesday afternoon. The Bears improve to 3-1 in their final fall match, while Nichols dips to 1-3 prior to the Bison's final action this weekend at the Stonehill Invitational. Senior Steve Carella and first year Brandon Roode earned Nichols' lone point with a 9-8 (2) victory at the top doubles flight.
