DUDLEY, Mass. (April 21) – The Nichols College women’s lacrosse team edged Anna Maria, 13-12, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game Wednesday at Vendetti Field. The Bison improve to 4-8 overall and 2-6 in TCCC action, while the AMCATS drop to 2-13 overall and 1-9 in TCCC games after losing their eighth straight game.

 

Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) recorded a career-high six points on five goals and an assist for the Bison. Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) added three goals and three assists, while Lindsay Gustafson (Pepperell, Mass.) scored twice.

 

Katie Schebel scored scored five goals for the AMCATS, while Amanda Hevy and Alexandra Smith added three each.

 

Nichols led, 7-1, with less than nine minutes left in the first half, but the AMCATS outscored their hosts, 6-1, over the remaining time to get within one at the break.

 

Hevy and Schebel scored in the opening 7:24 of the second half to put the AMCATS up, 9-8, but the Bison rattled off the next three in less than three minutes to retake the lead at 10-9 by the 11:20 mark.

 

The teams traded goals through the 24-minute mark with Nichols leading, 13-12 on a Shaughnessy tally at 24:18.

 

Mary Michaud (Agawam, Mass.) made 13 saves, while Lourdes Pena stopped five shots for the AMCATS.

 

Anna Maria held an 18-8 advantage in draw controls, and won the groundball battle at a 24-21 clip. The AMCATS scored on four of 13 free-position attempts, while the Bison converted four of five attempts.

 

Nichols is back in action on Friday in a 6 p.m. TCCC game at University of New England. Anna Maria hosts Western New England College Saturday at 11 a.m. for a conference game.

The Nichols College women's lacrosse team has qualified for the The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) championship tournament, which begins with quarterfinal round games on Saturday, April 30. The Bison, who were in a three-way tie for the eighth seed, earned the tournament's final berth via coin toss Monday afternoon. Nichols returns to the playoffs for the second time in program history and the first time since 2007, and will travel to top-seeded Western New England for a 4 p.m. game Saturday.

Nichols will await the result of a coin flip for the eighth and final seed in the TCCC Tournament with a 3-8 record. The winner of the coin flip between Nichols, New England College and University of New England will travel to top-seeded Western New England College for the quarterfinal round on Saturday, April 30.
