Riley Leads Men's Hoops to 68-67 Win at Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass.(Feb. 9) – Senior guard Bryan Riley (West Boylston, Mass.) drained a three pointer with 5.1 seconds left, capping off a career-high 25-point night as the Nichols College men’s basketball team rallied from as much as 19 points down in the first half to edge Wentworth, 68-67, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Tansey Gymnasium.

 

The host Leopards jumped out to an early 12-4 lead , with six of those points coming from senior forward Matt Abbott. Wentworth would then use a 15-2 run to extend a12-8 lead to a 27-10 lead with 10:04 left in the half, thanks in part to three three-pointers from freshman guard Corey Therriault, and would lead take a 32-13 lead on a pair of junior forward Sam Herrick free throws. Shooting 61.5 percent from the floor and holding the Bison to 27.6 percent, the Leopards took a 45-31 lead at the half.

 

After sophomore guard Adam Dombrowski hit a basket to open the second half, Nichols went on a 12-0 run with six points coming from freshman forward Kyle Mascilak (Sparta, N.J.) and four from Riley, to cut the lead to 47-43. Wentworth would go up by seven on a Herrick basket with 10:35 left before a three pointer from senior guard Chris Paquin (Barre, Mass.) and a layup from rookie Justin Kuntz (Wallingford, Conn.) cut the lead to 52-50 with 8:00 left.

 

Senior guard Jack Barrett hit three of four free throws to extend the lead to five, a lead the Leopards would take two more times, including West hitting two free throws with 2:01 left to make it a 66-61 game.

 

Riley brought the Bison within three with a basket with 1:43 left, and, after a missed three-point attempt, sophomore guard Michael Salis (Nashua, N.H.) hit a layup to cut the lead to 66-65 with 1:22 left.  Nichols had the ball after a missed Wentworth basket with 45 seconds left, but turned it over 14 seconds later. Riley fouled sophomore guard Brendan Monteiro, who sank the back end of a two-shot foul to make it 67-65 in favor of the hosts with 25 seconds left before Riley’s trifecta from the top of the key provided the heroics. Wentworth had one last attempt, but a game-winning shot would fall short.

 

Riley went 10-for-18 on the night and his lone three-point attempt came on the game winner. Mascilak added 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Pete Atkins (Gainesville, Fla.) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, with 11 coming off the defensive glass. Wentworth was led by West and Therriault, who each had 14 points. West also had seven rebounds while Therriault had five assists and three steals.

 

The win, Nichols’ second in its last three games, improves its record to 11-10 overall and 4-6 in TCCC play. The Bison host Eastern Nazarene on Saturday. Wentworth sees its five-game win streak come to an end, falling to 11-10 (7-3).  The Leopards host Curry on Saturday.

The Nichols College men's basketball team fell to visiting Wentworth, 92-84, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon. Marlon Bennett led Nichols for the second-straight game, scoring 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting in just 25 minutes off the bench. Jalen Graham added 15 points and a game-high eight assists. Matt Langadas scored 16 on 7-of-9 shooting, and Ryan Sheehan had a game-high seven steals to go with four assists, nine points and four rebounds.

Nichols College sophomore men's basketball forward Ryan Sheehan has been named to the 2011-12 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District men's basketball team, it was announced Thursday. One of six honorees in the district, Sheehan is one of just two sophomores selected from Division III nationwide.

The Nichols College men's basketball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end Thursday evening, falling 93-83 at Endicott in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game in MacDonald Gymnasium. The Bison again had an impressive outing from the bench, led by a team-high 18 points from first year guard Marlon Bennett. Classmate Matt Langadas added 16 for the Bison (9-11, 7-6 CCC) on 6-of-11 shooting. Senior guard Michael Salis and first year forward Joe Gallant combined for 21 of the Bison's 52 rebounds on the night.

The Nichols College men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat visiting Eastern Nazarene College, 101-90, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game Tuesday evening. Two-time CCC Rookie of the Week Matt Langadas led the Bison to their highest scoring outing in almost four years with 19 points and seven rebounds as Nichols extended its win streak to a season-high four games. First year guard Jalen Graham recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while CCC Player of the Week Ryan Sheehan led all players with seven assists to go with 15 points.

Nichols College men's basketball player Matt Langadas has been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for the second-straight week, and sophomore Ryan Sheehan was named Player of the Week for the second time this season, it was announced Tuesday. The pair led Nichols to a 2-0 week in conference games, defeating Curry and Western New England.

 A high scoring first half by Nichols College propelled the Bison to a  77-69 victory against Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Western New England University despite a furious second half comeback by the Golden Bears. The Bison offense proved to be too much for WNE as Nichols had four players in double-digit scoring on the afternoon, including Sam Horning, whose 3-for-4 effort beyond the arc led the Bison to bang 11 three-pointers in the game.  The Bison will try to ride the momentum of their three-game win streak into "BISON PRIDE" night, Tuesday against Eastern Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.

Reigning CCC Rookie of the Week Matt Langadas hit the game winning layup with three seconds remaining to give Nichols College an 80-78 victory over Curry College Wednesday evening in Milton. The bucket capped the second straight comeback win by the Bison, this time an 18-point effort to bring Nichols to a 7-10 overall record and an even 5-5 ledger in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) games. Sophomore Ryan Sheehan tied a career-high with 37 points, going 13-for-22 from the floor, and 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. Langadas went 5-for-9 from the field in contributing 11 points.
