Ellis Scores in Women's Hockey's 11-1 Quarterfinal Loss at #9 Manhattanville

RYE, N.Y. (Feb. 27) – Senior forward Candice Ellis (Gloucester, Mass.) scored in the Nichols College women’s ice hockey team’s postseason debut Saturday, an 11-1 loss to top-seeded and nationally ninth-ranked Manhattanville at the Playland Ice Casino. The eighth-seeded Bison, just in their second year of varsity status, finish the year with a 4-18-3 record. The regular-season champion Valiants improve to 19-6-1 and advance to the semifinals to host fifth-seeded New England College on Saturday, March 6.

Manhattanville scored two goals in the first, four in the second and five in the third before Ellis put the Bison on the board with 1:42 left to play off an assist from SueEllen Nault (Goffstown, N.H.). The Valiants finished 1-for-2 on the power play and added a pair of short-handed tallies from Katie Little, who led the nation’s top offense with four goals and a pair of assists on the day.

Junior Christine Rigosi (Ridgewood, N.Y.) made 17 saves while allowing five goals in the opening 29 minutes before giving way to senior Melissa Mansfield (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), who stopped 23 shots and allowed six goals over the remainder of the game. Sophia Kokkonis earned the win for the Valiants with 12 saves.

Nichols finished conference play with a 4-13-2 ledger, improving from its inaugural season by three wins. In ECAC action, the Bison increased their offensive production by 20 goals, and sophomore Mandy Manopla (West Palm Beach, Fla.) scored the program’s first hat trick this season while in conference action.

Megan Gerein knocked home the game-winning goal with 2.0 left in regulation to propel the Bison to the 3-2 win. Talia Hohmann and Grace Murphy also scored for the home team. Tori Gianformaggio posted her team-best fourth win of the season turning away 28 shots. Nichols is back in action tomorrow night at 7:40 p.m. when Saint Anselm is in town for a league contest.

Hot off a record-setting win, the Nichols College women's ice hockey team traveled to defending national champion and top-ranked Norwich University for a Saturday afternoon game. A trio of Bison netminders saw action against the nation's top offense. Tori Gianformaggio made 14 saves in the third period.

First-year Kerri Nadeau netted the game-winning goal 34 seconds into overtime to help push Nichols past Saint Michael's, 3-2, on Friday night. The win sets a new benchmark for victories in a season and snaps a five-game skid. Grace Murphy put the squad ahead early in the second as Talia Hohmann knotted the game 2-2 to send the game into an extra session. Tori Gianformaggio picked up the win collecting 21 saves. Nichols plays the defending national champion Norwich tomorrow in a 1:00 p.m. matinee.

Grace Murphy scored her second goal in as many games and third in the past four contests for the Bison as Francesca Palazzo turned away 50 shots on Saturday night. Murphy was aided by an assist from Talia Hohmann. The squad heads to Vermont next weekend to face Saint Michael's on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Norwich on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
