Women's Ice Hockey Falls 8-2 To Norwich

DUDLEY, Mass. (Feb. 19, 2010) – The Nichols College Women’s Hockey team falls to the Norwich University Cadets 8-2 Friday night in an ECAC East matchup. Haylie Carter (Forney, Tex.).  scored a goal and recorded an assist for the Bison in the loss. With the loss the Bison fall to 3-16-3 and 3-12-3 in conference play while the Cadets improve to 15-4-5 and 13-3-3 in conference play.

Norwich came out strong in the first period outshooting Nichols 18-5. They took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Felicia Desorcie beat Nichols’ goaltender after receiving a pass from sophomore Melissa Rundlett with 3:59 into the first period. Nichols knotted up the score three and a half minutes later when first year forward Emily Larosa (Weymouth, Mass.)  found the back of the net as she was spotted in front of the net, right off the faceoff by sophomore Haylie Carter Norwich added two more goals in the period by Bianca Bogda and Kelsey Cone to make the score 3-1 going into the second frame.

The second period was at a stand-still until 5:49 remaining in the period when Nichols was called for a roughing penalty. Norwich proceeded to score their second power-play goal of the night coming from sophomore Julie Fortier, 1:01 into the power-play. Then Nichols was called for another penalty with 4:07 left in the period for hitting from behind. Sophie Leclerc made Norwich 3-3 on the power-play for the game when she scored with 2:34 left in the second and 27 seconds remaining on the penalty. Norwich took a 5-1 advantage into the third.

Norwich added three more goals in the third period, while Nichols put in their second goal of the game. Rundlett put the Cadets up 6-1 with her short-handed goal with 18:58 remaining in the third. Ashley Cassan then made the score 7-1 when she scored the Cadets fourth power-play goal. Haylie Carter got Nichols their second goal on the game off of a deflected shot coming from Mary Fehr (Leamington, Ontario) next. The Cadets finished off the scoring with 6:58 remaining with a goal from Bianca Bogda.

Norwich outshot Nichols 51-12 in the game. They scored on all four power-plays in the game while the Bison went 0-3 on the power-play.  

Nichols hosts Castleton State tomorrow at 3:30 pm. Norwich finishes off the regular season at Amherst tomorrow at 7:30 pm.

Megan Gerein knocked home the game-winning goal with 2.0 left in regulation to propel the Bison to the 3-2 win. Talia Hohmann and Grace Murphy also scored for the home team. Tori Gianformaggio posted her team-best fourth win of the season turning away 28 shots. Nichols is back in action tomorrow night at 7:40 p.m. when Saint Anselm is in town for a league contest.

Hot off a record-setting win, the Nichols College women's ice hockey team traveled to defending national champion and top-ranked Norwich University for a Saturday afternoon game. A trio of Bison netminders saw action against the nation's top offense. Tori Gianformaggio made 14 saves in the third period.

First-year Kerri Nadeau netted the game-winning goal 34 seconds into overtime to help push Nichols past Saint Michael's, 3-2, on Friday night. The win sets a new benchmark for victories in a season and snaps a five-game skid. Grace Murphy put the squad ahead early in the second as Talia Hohmann knotted the game 2-2 to send the game into an extra session. Tori Gianformaggio picked up the win collecting 21 saves. Nichols plays the defending national champion Norwich tomorrow in a 1:00 p.m. matinee.

Grace Murphy scored her second goal in as many games and third in the past four contests for the Bison as Francesca Palazzo turned away 50 shots on Saturday night. Murphy was aided by an assist from Talia Hohmann. The squad heads to Vermont next weekend to face Saint Michael's on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Norwich on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
