DUDLEY, Mass. (Jan. 28) – The Nichols College men’s basketball team defeated Western New England College, 92-79, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup Thursday evening. Led by first year forward Kyle Mascilak’s (Sparta, N.J.) career-high 28 points  and hot shooting overall, the Bison put up a season high in points and snapped the Golden Bears’ five-game win streak. Nichols improves to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while WNEC dips to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in TCCC action.

 

Nichols had four players including Mascilak reach double figures in points. Junior guard Bryan Riley (West Boylston, Mass.) had a double-double with 18 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Junior Chris Paquin (Barre, Mass.) put in 15, while sophomore Pete Atkins (Gainesville, Fla.) recorded 14 points.

 

The Golden Bears had five players reach double figures in points. They were led by Chris Devine’s 17 points, 12 rebounds double-double. Andre Shaw scored 15, Mike Booker had 13 points and Brendan Murphy had 12. Rick Johnson led Western New England with 18 points on 6-12 shooting including two three-pointers.

 

The first half began with a fast pace and didn’t slow down for the rest of the game. The opening 19 minutes saw back and forth action as the teams traded the lead seven times.

With less than a minute left in the first half the Golden Bears held a one-point lead at 34-33. As the half was coming to a close Nichols nailed two three-pointers in the final minute. Atkins hit the first to hold a 36-34 lead, and then Riley knocked down a another with four seconds remaining to give the Bison a six-point lead heading into the half. The six-point lead marked the largest by either team in the half.

 

The second half began right where it left off with both teams coming out firing. Mascilak scored 12 of the Bison’s first 18 points of the half including two treys to spark Nichols’ offense as they expanded their lead to 16. Nichols did not relinquish their lead for the rest of the game even with the Golden Bears shooting away with 41 shots in the stanza.

 

Nichols College ended the game with a 51.9% shooting percentage from the floor and an 80% shooting percentage from the line. The Golden Bears fired off 79 shots in the game relying heavily on the three with 35 shots from behind the arc. The Bison outrebounded the Golden Bears 50-33, but the Bears committed 12 fewer turnovers than the Bison as with a 12 to 25 advantage.  

 

Nichols is back in action Saturday January 30 in a 3 p.m. TCCC game at Curry College. Western New England will also play at 3 p.m. Saturday in a home TCCC game against the University of New England.

The fifth-seeded Bison drop to 14-11 overall and await a possible ECAC DIII New England Tournament berth. The fourth-seeded Chargers improve to 15-11 and advance to the semifinals Thursday to face top-seeded Gordon at 7 p.m. in Wenham, Mass. Pete Atkins (Gainesville, Fla.) led the Bison with 24 points, scoring 14 in the first half on five-of-eight shooting, including two three pointers. Senior guard Bryan Riley (West Boylston, Mass.) added 23 points, scoring 17 in the second half.

The Nichols College men’s basketball team has earned the fifth seed in the The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament, making its fourth appearance in the last five seasons under 11th year Head Coach Dave Sokolnicki. The Bison (14-10, 7-6) will travel to fourth-seeded Colby-Sawyer (14-11, 7-6) on Tuesday, February 23, for a 7:00 p.m. quarterfinal round game at the Hogan Sports Center in New London, N.H. Seniors Bryan Riley (West Boylston, Mass.) and Ryan Wilcox (West Granby, Conn.) combined for 46 points to lead the Nichols College men’s basketball team to an 84-60 senior day victory over the University of New England in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game. Nichols improves to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in league action, while the Nor’Easters dip to 11-13 overall and 7-6 in conference games. Wilcox poured in a game-high 24 points, while Riley scored 22. Chris Paquin (Barre, Mass.) joined in on the double-digit scoring, chipping in with 13 points including three of four three-pointers. Nichols has earned the fifth seed in the TCCC Tournament and will travel to fourth-seeded Colby-Sawyer Tuesday evening for the quarterfinals.

The Nichols College men’s basketball team battled its way back after being down for nearly 38 minutes to snatch a 62-57 home victory against Regis College Wednesday night. Junior guard Justin Aldrich (Douglas, Mass.) put the Bison ahead, 56-55 with 2:10 left, with a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to give them their first lead in the game. With the conference victory, Nichols improves to 13-10 and 6-6 in the conference, standing in a three-way tie for seventh place with one game remaining on the schedule.

Senior forward Ryan Wilcox (West Granby, Conn.) sank the second of two free throws with 33 seconds left in the game to give him his 1,000th career point as he led the Nichols College men’s basketball team to a 77-67 win over Eastern Nazarene College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup Saturday afternoon. Wilcox becomes the 23rd player in Nichols College men’s basketball history to score his 1,000th point, and the second this season. After being just 16 points away from 1,000 coming into today’s game, the senior captain was able to match that number exactly thanks to three field goals and 10 made free throws, eight coming in the second half. Wilcox also had a team-high seven rebounds for the Bison.
