TCCC Names 29 Student-Athletes to All-Academic Team
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye named 29 Nichols College student-athletes to the The Commonwealth Coast Conference 2008-2009 Academic All-Conference Team, it was announced Friday. A total of 362 student-athletes from all 14 conference institutions were represented on the team.
The Academic All-Conference Team consists of any starter or significant reserve who has attained at least sophomore status and has maintained an overall minimum GPA of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00. Only members of sports teams in which the conference sponsors a championship are eligible for this team.
Nichols was represented by 14 sophomores, seven juniors and eight seniors from 10 of its 12 varsity teams which compete in the TCCC. Six honorees were dual majors. The most represented major was accounting, followed by sport management and marketing. In total, 11 majors were represented on the team.
The women’s soccer team had five student-athletes recognized, while the baseball, men’s soccer, women’s basketball and field hockey teams each had four student-athletes named to the team. Three softball student-athletes were recognized, and two student-athletes from the men’s lacrosse team also earned honors. One student-athlete from the men’s basketball, golf and women’s tennis teams were also named all-academic.

The Nichols College Athletics Department recently handed out its end-of-the year awards. Six special awards were given to graduating seniors, while six more were awarded to underclassmen. Coaches, department staff and honored guests gathered with the Class of 2010, a 52-member group of student-athletes, at the Senior Athlete Reception to wish them well and honor them for their dedication to the Bison athletics programs.

Nichols College recognized 130 of its student-athletes for their excellence in academics and athletics on Friday as part of National Student-Athlete Day. The students honored at the special ceremony, held in Nichols’ Auditorium, have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of over 3.0 and are members of at least one of the Bison’s 15 varsity programs. Keynote speaker Bill Pieczynski, Associate Vice President for Advancement, addressed the group prior to the awards ceremony.

The Colleges of Worcester Consortium, Inc. presented the Nichols College Bison Athletics Council Sophomore Class with a Community Engagement Award on March 2nd for exemplary service within the last year. The student-athletes sponsored a coat drive that provided over 100 coats to Abby’s House in Worcester and to the Free Winter Coat Closet at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Southbridge.
