Lindsay Hassett

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior Lindsay Jardin was 3-for-3 with two RBI and junior Danielle Lutenegger smacked a three-run double to lead Westfield State to a 10-0, five-inning victory over Nichols College in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled because of rain and muddy field conditions. Nichols drops to 13-22 and closes out the regular season with a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader against New England College at home on Saturday at noon.

Westfield scored seven runs in the first inning on six hits and two Bison errors. Jardin had two hits in the inning, including a two-run single. Lutenegger delivered the big blow with her two-out three-run double.

The Owls out-hit the Bison, 10-3. Sophomore second baseman Kristyn Carroll was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior catcher Gia Calabrese was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Also pounding doubles were senior center fielder Jackie Mason and sophomore designated player Alicia Gardner.

Designated hitter Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) was 2-for-2 for the Bison.

Winning pitcher Cheslea Sylvia struck out 10 and walked one in the five-inning game. Ashley Wyland (Schenectady, N.Y.) took the loss allowing seven runs (one earned) on six hits in the first two-thirds of an inning before giving way to Molly Ferraro (Millis, Mass.), who finished out the game allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits.
