BRISTOL, R.I. (Oct. 6) - The Roger Williams University Women’s Tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss to visiting Nichols College in a TCCC match on Tuesday evening.  The team dropped two of the three doubles matches, and split the singles matches against a top notch team from Nichols.

 

 

The No. 1 doubles match was won by Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) and Molly McGuire (East Sandwich, Mass.) from Nichols 8-6 over Leah Ribchinsky and Caitlin Osepchuk. The Hawks won the No. 2 doubles, as Tracey Klein and Amanda Wolfe overtook Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) and Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) by a score of 8-2.  The third doubles match was won by Nichols College’s Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) and Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) over RWU’s Katelin Richard and Kristin Dono by a final score of 9-7.

 

The Hawks were split the singles matches but it was not enough for the win.  The No. 1 match went to RWU’s Ribchinsky as she beat McQuiggan by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.  The second flight match also went to the Hawks as Klein defeated McGuire, 6-3, 6-2.  The third match was the final victory in singles for the Hawks as Wolfe beat Cifone in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3-0). 

 

Things went differently in the final three contests, as Nichols was victorious in the fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches.  Balabanova beat Osepchuk in two sets, 7-6 (3-0), 6-3.  Nichols’ Miller then beat Richard in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.  The final match was won by the Bison’s Woodruff over Dono by scores of 6-2 and 6-2.

 

The Hawks drop to 6-5 on the year and 6-3 in the TCCC.  Meanwhile the Bison improve to 13-1 overall and are tied for the top spot in the TCCC at 9-1.

 

Nichols College is next in action on Saturday as they host Gordon at noon in their final match of the regular season.  The Hawks will also be playing Gordon in their next match, on Friday at 4:00 pm, a game that was rescheduled from this past Saturday.

Senior Chelsey Miller claimed the match-clinching fifth point with a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory to help send the #1 Nichols to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship match as the team defeated #4 Salve Regina 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Nichols moves on to host #2 Endicott on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for the CCC Championship and automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament in the spring.

The Nichols women's tennis team claimed three major Commonwealth Coast Conference awards and numerous all-conference nods following the 2011 regular season. Sophomore Anna Dyakiv was named Player of the Year, while first-year Lindsay Benoit was selected as the Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Paul Brower was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

Nichols sophomore Anna Dyakiv and first-year Lindsay Benoit have earned weekly women's tennis honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference, it was announced Tuesday. Dyakiv took home Player of the Week honors for the second time this season while Lindsay Benoit was named Rookie of the Week for an eye-popping fourth time.
