POMFRET, Conn. (Oct. 3) – The Nichols College women’s tennis team won its record 12th match of the season Saturday in a 5-2 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Salve Regina University at the Pomfret School. First year Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) edged out a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win at sixth singles to clinch the match for the Bison, who improve to 12-1 overall and take over first place in the TCCC with an 8-1 conference ledger. Salve Regina falls to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in conference matches.

Nichols led, 2-1, after doubles play with wins at the first and third flights. First year Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) and senior Molly McGuire (E. Sandwich, Mass.) posted an 8-3 victory over Erin Phillips and Jessica Timpano. Woodruff and Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) earned the other point for the home team with an 8-2 win at third doubles, defeating Gina DeMaio and Elise Jones.

The Seahawks got their doubles point from Nichol Stevens and Valerie Leso, who defeated Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) and Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.), 8-4.

Phillips got things rolling for Salve Regina as the first to finish on the singles side, posting a 6-3, 6-0 win over McQuiggan, but it was all Bison after that, with straight-set wins at the fifth and fourth flights before Woodruff clinched at the sixth spot.
