Ryan Wytrych

NEW LONDON, N.H. (Oct. 28) -- The Nichols College men’s soccer team scored the game’s lone goal midway through the second half to defeat the Colby-Sawyer Chargers on a very rainy and cold senior day. Junior Ryan Wytrych (Feeding Hills, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season to lift the Bison to their 12th victory of the year.

On the wet and sloppy field, not many chances were to be had for either side. However, the advantage seemed to be with the team heading towards the goal on the south end. The Chargers controlled the ball for most of the first half going in that direction and took two shots on net. Nevertheless, the game remained scoreless as Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) made both saves.

The second half was much of the same for both sides as they tried to keep their footing. The Bison controlled the ball in the south end in the second half, taking eight shots with four on net. Their goal came when Colby-Sawyer was whistled for a foul just outside the right of the box. Junior Matthew Nash (West Springfield, Mass.) took the free kick and sent the ball into a crowd of players in front of the goal. Wytrych tracked the ball to his right foot and flicked it past the Chargers keeper Chris Feltes.

Hamilton finished with three saves in preserving his fifth shutout of the season. Feltes finished the contest with five saves and 385 for his career, ranking him second all-time in Colby-Sawyer history.

Nichols, now 12-6 overall and 8-5 in TCCC play, currently sits in a tie for fifth place in the conference standings and will be the sixth seed in the TCCC post-season tournamnet. The Bison will travel to third-seeded Wentworth for a quarterfinal game on Saturday, October 31. The Chargers finish the 2009 campaign with a 3-15 overall record and a TCCC mark of 2-11.
