NEW LONDON, N.H. (Oct. 27) -- The Nichols College women’s soccer team solidified a spot in the upcoming The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Samantha Abro’s (Northborough, Mass.) second half goal spoiled the Chargers’ senior day festivities.

The first scoring chance of the match came 10 minutes into the first half when Colby-Sawyer senior Laura Sansoucie had a one-on-one opportunity. She shot the ball to the left side of the net, but Nichols keeper Nicole Johnson (Westhampton, Mass.) was up to the task and made the diving save. Johnson finished the day with five saves en route to the shutout.

The remainder of the first half was played physically, but neither side could get on the board with a goal. The physicality continued into the second frame and proved to be costly to the Chargers. In the 49th minute, Colby-Sawyer committed a foul just outside the box on the left side of the field. Bison junior Jessica Ferris (Springfield, Mass.) sent the free kick into the box to her awaiting teammates. Samantha Abro put her foot on the ball and struck it past the Chargers keeper for the 1-0 lead. For Abro, the goal was her league-leading 22nd of the season.

Nichols (10-8, 7-6), who overcame 19 fouls in the game, now awaits conference tournament seeding and will play a quarterfinal match on the road on Saturday, October 31.
