SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 13) – Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn DiBuono (Auburn, Mass.) netted the game winning goal with 1:32 remaining in overtime as the Nichols College women’s soccer team came from behind to defeat Western New England College, 3-2, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference match on Tuesday at Suprenant Field.

Nichols improves its overall record to 6-8 and 3-6 in TCCC play while snapping the Golden Bears’ four game win streak. WNEC drops below the .500 mark at 6-7 and 5-4 in the conference.

Junior defender Jessica Ferris (Springfield, Mass.) gave Nichols a 1-0 advantage off a direct kick with 37:01 left in the first half, but the Golden Bears quickly tied it up off a corner kick set up by junior midfielder Shannon Pescatello who found sophomore midfielder Andrea Almeida for the score.

Western New England College took the lead five minutes later as junior forward Heather Mortell put in her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Pescatello had the assist.

The Bison never let up however. With 12:46 to go in the contest, sophomore midfielder Laurel Houle (Brooklyn, Conn.) collided with WNEC senior goalkeeper Jessica Covino to keep the play alive and tied it. Sophomore forward Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) was credited with the assist.

Western New England College out shot its opponent 31-10 and forced eight corner kicks.

Covino finished with two saves. Nichols junior goalie Nicole Johnson (Westhampton, Mass.) collected three saves in the first 76 minutes, while Maureen Lynch (Holbrook, Mass.) had one in the remainder of regulation.

Nichols travels to New England College Saturday for a noon TCCC game.
