Field Hockey Defeats Anna Maria, 5-2, in Conference Matchup

DUDLEY, Mass.—The Nichols College field hockey team defeated Anna Maria, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Vendetti Field. Junior Sara Bailey (Athol, Mass.) and sophomore Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, N.H.) each had two goals for the Bison. Nichols improves their record to 8-5, while Anna Maria falls to 1-11.

Bailey started the scoring early in the game, when she scored off a rebound into the lower left corner of the net during the third minute of play. She scored again in the first half, off a feed to the middle from outside the arc by Clinton.

Later in the first half, Bailey returned the favor to Clinton, passing it from the right through the middle, setting Clinton up for a shot in the left corner, past Anna Maria goalie, Alyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) Clinton scored again in the second half, off a pass to the middle by Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.).

The Bison scored one more time midway through the second half, when senior Brittany Case (Cambridge, Mass.) put it in after a scramble around the net left her an open shot.

Anna Maria kept pushing throughout the second half, and broke through late in the second half when junior forward Angela Giuffrida (Leicester, Mass.) received a pass off a corner, and shot it in the lower left corner from 10 yards out. Giuffrida scored again in the second half off a shot that was deflected by the Nichols goalie and picked up by Giuffrida for the score.

Junior MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) split the time in the net for Nichols with first-year goalie Mary Michaud (Agawam, Mass.). Bednarz recorded one save, and Michaud picked up three. With the win, Bednarz improves her record to 8-4.Boykin recorded 20 saves for the visiting AMCATS, and with the loss falls to 1-10 overall.

The Bison are now 8-5 overall, and 4-0 in the conference. Anna Maria is now 1-11, 0-5 in the conference.

Next, Nichols hosts Worcester State on Wednesday, October 15 at 7 p.m., and Anna Maria plays Regis College at home Monday at 3:30 p.m. in a TCCC game.

Four members of the Nichols College field hockey team have earned All-Conference honors from The Commonwealth Coast Conference, it was announced Friday by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. Seniors Brittney Case (Cambridge, N.Y.) and Jackie Dwyer (Enfield, Conn.) earned First Team accolades, while junior MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, N.H.) were awarded Second Team honors.

Junior Sara Bailey (Athol, Mass.) had two goals and an assist to lead the Nichols field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Western New England College Tuesday night in the final game of the regular season for both teams. The Bison evened their record at 9-9 and improved to 5-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference to earn the third seed in the conference playoffs. Nichols will host sixth seed Salve Regina Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Gordon College Fighting Scots field hockey team defeated the Nichols College Bison 3-1 Saturday morning at Vendetti Field. Senior forward Mollie Sweeney (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with just under five minutes into second half when she put the shot into the lower right corner of the goal after it had deflected off a Nichols defender in the center of the arc.

Henniker, N.H. – New England College first-year forward Elise Luccarelli netted the lone goal of the game to lift the Pilgrims past the visiting Nichols College Bison, 1-0, Thursday afternoon.  With the win the Pilgrims gain sole possession of second place in the TCCC, improving to 6-1 in league play and 13-4 overall. The loss drops the Bison to 4-2 in TCCC action and evens their overall record at 8-8. MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) made 13 second-half saves to finish with 16 on the day.
