The Nichols College women’s tennis team opened the 2010 season Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 non-conference victory at Rhode Island College. The Bison’s lineup was bolstered by stellar play from all three first-year players in their collegiate debuts. Nichols opens The Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday in a noon home match against Curry. Anna Dyakiv clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the top singles spot while classmate Erin Rivers rallied in both sets for a 6-4, 6-3 win at fifth singles. Nicole Marziarz beat the heat for a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the fourth flight.

The Nichols College women’s tennis team has been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as an All-Academic Team for the second time in three years and  seven individuals have earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status, it was announced recently. Nichols led the The Commonwealth Coast Conference with seven ITA Scholar Athletes. The Bison achieved ITA All-Academic Team status with a cumulative team grade point average above 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.

The third-seeded Endicott College women’s tennis team upset second-seeded Nichols College, 5-1, in the The Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinals Wednesday afternoon at the Francis W. Robinson Courts. Nichols closes out its record-setting season at 15-2, the most wins in program history. Nichols’ lone point of the day came at third doubles where Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) and Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) posted an 8-1 win.

First year women’s tennis player Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) has been named the The Commonwealth Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week for play ending Saturday, October 17. Cifone did not lose a game at the top singles spot in the Bison’s first-ever TCCC quarterfinal victory last Wednesday, a 9-0 win over Gordon. She also teamed up with Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) to break the single-season doubles wins record with an 8-1 victory at the top flight.

The Nichols College women’s tennis team earned its first-ever trip to the The Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinals Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 victory over Gordon College in the quarterfinal round at the Francis W. Robinson Courts. The Bison’s victory was highlighted by an 8-1 doubles victory from Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) and Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) to break the program’s single-season doubles wins record. Miller also posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Second-seeded Nichols will host third-seeded Endicott on Wednesday, October 21, at 2 p.m. for the semifinal round.

The Nichols College women’s tennis team landed five individuals on the 2009 The Commonwealth Coast Conference 2009 All-TCCC Women’s Tennis Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In addition, the Bison were recipients of three of the four major individual awards, as first year Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) was named the Rookie of the Year, senior Molly McGuire (E. Sandwich, Mass.) was tabbed the Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Head Coach Paul Brower took home Coach of the Year honors. Also earning All-Conference honors were Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.), who was named to the Honorable Mention Singles Team, and the doubles tandem of Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) and Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia), who earned a nod at Honorable Mention Doubles.

The Nichols College women’s tennis team’s The Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinal match against Gordon College scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at 2 p.m. at the Francis W. Robinson Courts has been postponed due to inclement weather. The match will now be played on Wednesday, October 14 at 2 p.m. Second-seeded Nichols, which earned a share of the TCCC regular-season title with Colby-Sawyer, finished the conference schedule at 10-1 and hosts seventh-seeded Gordon (5-8, 5-6 TCCC). In the teams’ last matchup on October 14, Nichols posted a 9-0 victory.

The Nichols College women’s tennis team clinched a share of the The Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season title Saturday with a 9-0 victory over visiting Gordon College at the Francis W. Robinson Courts on Senior Day. Nichols closes out the regular season with a 14-1 overall record and a 10-1 mark in TCCC matches, tying for first with Colby-Sawyer. Nichols will host Gordon in the quarterfinal round Tuesday, October 13, at 2:00 p.m. Monica Bassi (Branford, Conn.) and Molly McGuire (E. Sandwich, Mass.) were honored on Senior Day.

The Nichols College women's tennis team edged Roger Williams, 5-4, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference match Tuesday afternoon in Bristol, R.I. The Bison (13-1, 9-1 TCCC) led 2-1 after doubles play and won the fourth through sixth singles flights to earn the victory. Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) and Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) won a hard-fought 9-7 match at third doubles, and each posted singles victories.

The Nichols College women’s tennis team won its record 12th match of the season Saturday in a 5-2 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Salve Regina University at the Pomfret School. First year Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) edged out a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win at sixth singles to clinch the match for the Bison, who improve to 12-1 overall and take over first place in the TCCC with an 8-1 conference ledger. Salve Regina falls to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in conference matches.
