DUDLEY, Mass. (March 29) – Six Nichols College field hockey student-athletes have been named to the 2009 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad, it was announced March 25. In addition, the Nichols College field hockey team has earned the 2009 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA DIII National Academic Team Award for the third straight year. Senior forward/midfielder Sara Bailey (Athol, Mass.), senior back Marie Kauker (Bellingham, Mass.), and junior midfielders Amber Cottrell (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), and Courtney Flagg (Spofford, N.H.) were all named to the team for the third consecutive year. Junior midfielder Mary Kate Frodema (Springfield, Mass.) was named to the team for the second straight year. Freshman forward/midfielder Emily Widdison (Greenfield, Mass.) was also named to the team.

Nichols college first year midfielder Emily Widdison (Greenfield, Mass.) has been named to the 2009 ECAC Division III New England Field Hockey All-Star Second Team, it was announced Monday. Widdison, a The Commonwealth Coast Conference First Team selection, helped lead the Bison to a program-best 18-4 record and their first-ever NCAA Championship Tournament appearance.

Three members of the Nichols College field hockey team have been selected to the 2009 Longstreth/NFHCA Division III New England East All-Region Second Team, it was announced Monday. Junior forward Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, N.H.), sophomore forward Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) and sophomore goalkeeper Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) all earned All-Region honors, marking career firsts for all three.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology field hockey team held on to a 2-0 first-half lead to defeat Nichols College, 2-1, on Vendetti Field in the 2009 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship First Round Wednesday afternoon. Nichols ends its historic season with an 18-4 record. The Engineers improve to 18-4 and advance to face Tufts University Saturday in the Second Round in Medford, Mass. The game marked the first NCAA Championship Tournament appearance for both teams. Barbara Roy (Springfield, Mass.) scored her sixth goal of the season for the Bison.

The Nichols College field hockey team has been selected to the 2009 NCAA Championship Tournament for the first time in program history and will host a first round game on Wednesday, November 11, taking on MIT at 4 p.m. on Vendetti Field. The NCAA Championship game on Nichols’ campus marks the first in school history. Tickets for Wednesday’s game will be available at the gate and will be $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Nichols students will get in free, courtesy of Nichols College SGA. The game will be broadcast live on WNRC 97.5-FM and live online.

Dudley, Mass. (Nov. 9) – Nichols College field hockey players Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.), Amber Cottrell (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), and Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) have earned weekly honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference, it was announced Monday by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. Correia, a forward, was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Cottrell, a back, was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Forand, a goalkeeper, was named the Rookie of the Week. The honor marks the first on the season for Correia and Cottrell, and the sixth for Forand.

Sophomore forward Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) had a hat trick to lead the Nichols College field hockey team to its second The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship title in a 4-1 victory over New England College Saturday at Vendetti Field. The third-seeded Bison held on to a 2-0 first-half lead to snap the Pilgrims’ streak of seven consecutive titles and improve to a program-record 18-3 on the year. Nichols will await the NCAA Championship Tournament pairings, which will be announced on Monday, November 9th at 9 a.m. on www.ncaa.com. New England College stands at 14-8 on the year and now awaits a possible postseason tournament bid.

The Nichols College field hockey team is set to host the The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship for the first time in program history Saturday as the third-seeded Bison take on the fourth-seeded New England College Pilgrims on Vendetti Field at 1 p.m. Admission for the game is set at $5 for adults, $3 for students with valid college identification, and is free for children under 12 and Nichols College students with valid college identification. Third seed Nichols College grabbed a 2-0 lead early in the second half and held off a furious attack late by second-seeded University of New England for a 3-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament semifinal victory in field hockey action under the lights Wednesday. The Bison advance to host the TCCC Championship game Saturday against No. 4 New England College, a 2-1 winner over top-seed Endicott College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Vendetti Field in Dudley, Mass. The Bison built a 2-0 lead on a first-half goal by sophomore Lauren Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) and an early second-half tally by sister Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.).
